What Is a Melamine Shelf? Material, Edges and Care
Share
A SHELFIX melamine shelf is a 3/4-inch particleboard shelf board with a melamine surface. It is cut to the finished length and depth you choose for an existing cabinet, pantry or closet. The surface provides the finish; the particleboard is the core.
Is melamine the same as solid wood?
No. SHELFIX's maple and white oak options are wood-look melamine finishes, not solid maple or solid oak. White, black and gray are also melamine finishes. Compare the real product photos in our custom shelf collection before ordering.
How does SHELFIX make a custom shelf?
We CNC cut melamine-faced boards to the length and depth submitted with your order in Florida. Matching PVC edge banding is applied according to the exposed-edge option you select. Our standard online shelves are straight rectangular boards; review the available dimensions and options on the product page.
Why do shelf edges matter?
A cut board has an exposed particleboard edge. Banding finishes the selected edges for appearance and everyday use. On our order form, the front edge follows the shelf length. Check which sides will remain visible in your installation before selecting the edge option.
Are melamine shelves waterproof?
No. SHELFIX melamine-faced particleboard shelves are intended for indoor use. They are not recommended for outdoor or high-moisture spaces. Edge banding does not make the shelf board waterproof. For everyday cleaning, use a soft, lightly damp cloth and dry the surface; avoid soaking the board.
How much weight can a shelf hold?
There is no single safe weight figure for every installation. Shelf span, support hardware, support placement and the load all affect performance. Longer spans or heavier stored items may require additional support. SHELFIX supplies the board; brackets, cabinet structures, shelf supports and installation are not included.
How do I order the right size?
Measure a shelf that fits or check the opening, supports and clearance with our custom shelf measuring guide. Then choose a finish, enter the finished length and depth, select banding and quantity, and review the configuration before checkout. For a larger cut list, visit Bulk & Trade Orders.
