Where 24-inch deep shelves fit
- Kitchen base cabinets – base cabinets are typically 24 in. deep on the outside, but the inside is smaller because of the face frame, door and back panel. Most need a shelf between about 21 and 23 in. deep – measure first.
- Garages and workshops – full-depth shelves for totes, tool boxes and paint in a dry space.
- Utility and storage closets – a sturdy shelf along a storage wall.
- Deep walk-in pantries – a bottom shelf for bulk items and appliances.
Replacing a base cabinet shelf
Measure the inside depth from the back panel to the inside of the face frame, and the width between the side walls (or between the shelf supports). Subtract about 1/8 in. from the width. Then order that exact size – we cut to 1/16 inch, so you do not have to settle for the closest stock size.

Questions about 24-inch deep shelves
My base cabinet is 24 inches deep. What size shelf do I need?
Almost always less than 24 in. The face frame and back panel take up space, so most base cabinets need a shelf around 21 to 23 in. deep. Measure inside the cabinet and order that size.
Will a 24-inch deep shelf sag?
Depth does not cause sagging – length and load do. For heavy loads, support 3/4 in. melamine shelves at least every 30 to 32 in.
Can you drill holes for shelf pins?
Yes. Drilled holes and corner radius are available as add-ons in the designer.
How long does delivery take?
Production takes 1–3 business days and shipping 2–5 business days, so most orders arrive in 3–8 business days anywhere in the US.
